As winter approaches, many wonder if it’s safe to perform windshield repairs in cold weather. While working in freezing temperatures isn’t ideal, it is definitely possible with some adjustments. Follow these tips to get the best results during cold weather repairs.
First, avoid leaving your resin and tools in your vehicle overnight in frigid conditions. Bring your windshield repair kit indoors so everything is warm and ready for use the next day. During the workday, keep your resin warm—carrying the bottles in your pocket can help.
To warm the windshield, use the vehicle’s defroster, but be cautious not to overheat the glass. Aim for around 70°F to avoid cracking. If a defroster isn’t available, gently heat the repair area with a lighter, but be careful not to overdo it.
Allow extra time for the resin to cure in cold weather. Typically, an additional two minutes should suffice if there’s plenty of sunlight. For partly cloudy days, add another minute or two. If you’re using a UV lamp, keep it warm as well for optimal curing.
Lastly, never attempt to repair a wet windshield. Ensure the crack is completely dry before starting the repair to guarantee proper adhesion and results.
